M23 Secures Key Areas in South Kivu’s Kalehe Territory Amid Fierce Clashes

The M23 rebel group, in a showdown with the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) coalition forces, has seized control of several strategic areas in Kalehe Territory, South Kivu Province, in Eastern DRC.

On the afternoon of Sunday, January 19, 2025, fighters led by Maj. Gen. Sultan Makenga captured the Rugeshi and Buhovu areas. These locations sit on the slopes of Mount Bukumba, just a few kilometers from Minova, the largest town in Kalehe Territory.

Gains After Intense Clashes

The capture of Rugeshi and Buhovu follows intense battles between M23 and Congolese forces (FARDC), supported by their allies, including FDLR, Wazalendo militias, Burundian troops, and European and Asian mercenaries.

This advance came just a day after M23 secured Lumbishi, a village in Numbi within the Buzi Groupement, Buhavu Chiefdom, also in Kalehe Territory.

M23’s Expanding Presence

The group’s foray into South Kivu marks its continued expansion after previously taking control of large parts of Masisi Territory in North Kivu, including its major towns, and areas in Lubero, Walikale, Nyiragongo, and beyond.

Government Forces Retreat

Congolese coalition forces are reportedly retreating from Kalehe toward Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu Province. There are also reports suggesting that M23 might be planning to capture the major cities of Goma and Bukavu.

M23’s steady advances and the retreat of government troops underscore the escalating conflict in Eastern Congo, raising concerns over the potential for further instability in the region.
