M23 Clarifies Intentions Toward SANDF, Provides Humanitarian Aid, and Urges Repatriation

The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) wishes to issue this statement to clarify recent developments involving the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) contingent currently stationed in their operational base. We aim to address any misconceptions and affirm our commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all personnel involved.

The M23 reiterates that it harbors no intention of harming SANDF troops present in their designated base. Despite the complex and tense security situation in the region, M23 has taken proactive measures to prevent any incidents that may compromise the safety and well-being of these soldiers.

The SANDF contingent remains in possession of their full complement of weapons and operational equipment. At no point has there been any attempt to disarm or destabilize them. Instead, we emphasize our position as facilitators of stability and humane treatment during this sensitive period.

In line with our responsibility to protect and assist those within our operational zones, M23 is actively facilitating the provision of essential supplies, including food and water, to the SANDF troops.

We recognize the logistical challenges and hardships that may arise in such situations and have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that humanitarian needs are met without disruption. Our priority remains the dignity and welfare of all individuals, including foreign personnel deployed within our territories.

To avoid any prolonged challenges or misunderstandings, we strongly encourage the SANDF personnel to engage with their government and initiate immediate repatriation processes. It is in the best interest of all parties involved that this matter be resolved swiftly and peacefully.

We also wish to announce that, in collaboration with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), arrangements have been made for the dignified repatriation of the remains of SANDF soldiers who have tragically fallen during recent operations.

This solemn process underscores our commitment to upholding respect and dignity even amid conflict. M23 continues to advocate for constructive dialogue and peaceful resolutions to ongoing challenges in the region. We remain hopeful that all stakeholders will prioritize diplomacy and cooperation as the means to achieve lasting stability.

This communiqué is a reaffirmation of our commitment to upholding humanitarian principles, fostering peaceful engagements, and ensuring that no harm comes to those who find themselves in complex operational environments.
