Mwami Radjabu Rugishi arrives in Goma amid rising tensions in eastern DRC

Mwami Radjabu Rugishi, a notable figure from Kalehe and a member of AFC/M23, has recently arrived in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

This arrival comes amid heightened tensions in the eastern part of the country, marked by clashes between government forces and the M23 movement group.

At the end of January 2025, the M23 intensified its military operations, seizing several strategic localities, including Goma on January 27. This takeover has led to massive population displacements, worsening an already concerning humanitarian crisis. Reports indicate human rights violations, including summary executions and sexual violence, perpetrated by various parties in the conflict.

The international community has responded by calling for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians. The United Nations Security Council condemned the M23’s advances and urged the withdrawal of foreign forces present in the DRC, reaffirming the country’s sovereignty.

Mwami Radjabu Rugishi’ s arrival in Goma could indicate the AFC/M23’s intention to strengthen its political and military presence in the region. However, the exact implications of this development remain unclear, as local and regional dynamics continue to evolve.

It is crucial that all stakeholders prioritize dialogue and seek peaceful solutions to end civilian suffering and establish lasting stability in eastern DRC.
