On October 21, 2023, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a major operation took place as the M23 movement group launched simultaneous attacks in various parts of Rutshuru.
This operation targeted different areas, including Kisangani (small), Busenene, Sterling, Bambo, and Kishishe.
M23 had already captured Tongo and then began pursuing enemy forces in two directions: one towards Nyiragongo and Kibumba, and the other continuing towards Kishishe.
Heavy Resistance at Busenene and SterlingÂ
Frontline reports indicate that in Busenene and Sterling, M23 faced significant resistance because Burundian FDNB forces had established strongholds there, along with Kenyan soldiers who were also present at the time.
Operation Donataka
The battle began at 5:00 AM when M23 launched an offensive known as Operation Donataka. This operation marked intense combat as FDNB troops and FDLR militants fought together against M23.
The fighting continued into the night, prompting M23 to reorganize its troops for a more structured advance.
During this reorganization phase, M23 carried out defense checks to assess enemy positions.
Unexpected Discovery: Drug Stash at Enemy Camps
Surprisingly, the first enemy base they inspected contained large quantities of marijuana, revealing that Burundian FDNB troops and FDLR fighters had been stationed there.
General Omega Escapes M23 Ambush
It was at this location that General Omega, a key FDLR leader known for his role in massacres against Congolese Rwandaphone, had been staying.
This revelation angered M23 movement , as it confirmed long-standing suspicions of collaboration between Burundian FDNB forces and FDLR militants, despite previous denials.
It also provided further proof of the coordination between FDLR and Burundian troops, as M23 had previously explained to journalist Umutesi Scovia during her visit to their positions contrary to Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye’s claims that no Burundian soldiers were in the DRC.
General Omega Now a Target
Following this battle, General Omega became a high-priority target for M23, as he was wanted for his involvement in past massacres against Congolese Rwandaphone.
