FARDC’s Drone Deployment in Walikale: A Major Obstacle to Peace

To the national and international community, Contrary to the statement released on Sunday, March 23, 2025, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and their allied forces have not withdrawn their attack drones from the Walikale region. This ongoing military presence raises serious concerns about the ceasefire’s integrity and the future of the peace process in the country’s eastern region.

The continued deployment of military drones in Walikale is a significant impediment to the repositioning of the Alliance of Forces for Change (AFC/M23). This violation of agreed commitments undermines efforts to establish lasting peace and further escalates tensions between conflicting parties.

Despite increased diplomatic efforts by the international community and regional mediators to enforce the ceasefire agreements, the reluctance of FARDC and its allies to withdraw aerial military assets threatens to derail progress. This raises concerns about the Congolese government’s true commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

It is imperative that all parties uphold their commitments and facilitate the full implementation of the peace agreements. The international community must take a more proactive role in ensuring compliance with the ceasefire and fostering constructive dialogue.

As civilians continue to suffer the consequences of ongoing instability, a firm and immediate commitment to peace is more crucial than ever. The withdrawal of military drones and adherence to peace commitments must be prioritized to prevent further escalation and restore trust among the warring factions.
