We are no longer puppets, nor terrorists, nor strangers. Kinshasa, April 23, 2025, abreeze of hope is blowing over the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, following a joint declaration signed this the Alliance Fleuve Congo April 23 in Kinshasa between representatives of the Alliance Fleuve Congo /March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) and the Congolese government.
Facilitated by the active mediation of the State of Qatar, these talks mark a historic turning point in efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict that has plagued the region for years.
In an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect, both parties committed to the immediate cessation of hostilities. The objective is clear: to establish a credible truce that paves the way for a lasting ceasefire and in-depth dialogue on the root causes of the crisis.
“We have chosen the path of dialogue, peace, and national reconciliation. War can no longer be an option. It is time to think about the future of our people,” said a member of the AFC/M23 delegation present in Kinshasa.
In their statement, both delegations firmly rejected any speech of hatred, intimidation, or stigmatization, calling on local communities to take ownership of the peace process. An appeal was also made to civil society, religious leaders, and the media to actively promote a message of peace, tolerance, and unity.
Through this agreement, the AFC/M23 reaffirms its position as a political actor concerned with the well-being of the Congolese population. The movement emphasizes the need for a structured dialogue capable of addressing the root causes of the conflict in Eastern DRC: marginalization, insecurity, social injustice, and poor governance.
In a gesture of gratitude, AFC/M23 representatives praised Qatar’s involvement, whose ongoing diplomatic efforts helped create an atmosphere conducive to negotiation.
“Qatar’s support was essential. Thanks to it, the doors to dialogue are now open. It is now up to each actor to act with responsibility and vision,”said the head of the AFC/M23 delegation.
As negotiations continue, all eyes are now on the concrete implementation of the commitments made. If the promises are kept, this agreement could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the people of the East, long trapped in a complex and painful conflict.
Through dialogue, AFC/M23 reaffirms its commitment to build, alongside the Congolese people, a true, just, and lasting peace.
As the process unfolds, all eyes will be on the region to see whether words will be translated into action.
