On Wednesday, May 20, 2025, the first cohort of soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) specializing in the use of long-range weaponry officially completed months of training at the Bahuma military training center, located in Kisangani, Tshopo Province.
The graduation ceremony was held in strict secrecy due to security concerns, and the exact number of soldiers who completed the training was not disclosed.
However, military officials stated that the soldiers received specialized training in the use of heavy, long-range weapons aimed at strengthening FARDC’s ability to deal with ongoing security threats affecting various parts of the country.
The ceremony was presided over by Brigadier General Mbunga Modeste, Deputy Commander of the FARDC’s Third Military Zone.
In his speech, he emphasized that these soldiers will play a crucial role in national security operations.
He said: “We need you—those who operate heavy artillery. Wherever you are deployed, discipline will be essential.”
Brig. Gen. Mbunga further urged the soldiers to apply their newly acquired skills responsibly and to uphold the behavior expected of experienced military personnel.
He also issued a stern warning against the use of mobile phones during military operations, pointing out the security risks involved.
He said: “Do not use your phones during operations—you could expose your location. We must demonstrate discipline everywhere.”
This training follows another session completed the previous Friday, where another group of soldiers trained in the use of mortars—including 60mm, 81mm, and 82mm calibers—graduated in Bunia, Ituri Province.
That training was conducted by United Nations peacekeeping forces (MONUSCO) in collaboration with FARDC, focusing on enhancing specialized skills for handling heavy weaponry in combat situations.
These training programs are part of FARDC’s broader efforts to improve the performance of its forces, especially as the country continues to confront the AFC/M23 alliance.
