According to reports from local administrative leaders in Ikobo, the fighting began on Monday when Wazalendo fighters, the Congolese army (FARDC), and Burundian troops launched attacks on AFC/M23 positions but were repelled.
Following the clashes, AFC/M23 took control of six areas: Iremya, Mirungi, Kanune, Banamuronga, Kalehe, and Kitanda.
AFC/M23 and TWIRWANEHO forces set up new bases in areas that frequently face attacks, including Irimba, Kanune, Rusamambu, Buhimburwa, Kilambo, and Busunzu, all located within Ikobo sector.
In Kisimba sector, which borders Ikobo, fighting erupted again on Wednesday and Thursday.
AFC/M23 established a base in Kalonge and also captured several other areas including Musambo, Kyanjikiro, Katobo, Ihula, Mbukuru, Mukohwa, Ngambi, and Buhimba, where their troops regained control over territories previously lost.
Local media sources report that Wazalendo fighters, having been defeated in many areas, have now retreated to regions like Kashukano, Kisone, and Busaka.
The renewed fighting comes at a time when AFC/M23 is engaged in peace talks with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), currently taking place in Qatar. These negotiations began in March this year.
The talks aim to find a long-term solution to the conflict that has plagued the DRC for years, but they have stirred tensions within the Kinshasa government and among its allied groups such as the Wazalendo.
The ongoing insecurity in Eastern Congo continues to severely affect ordinary civilians, many of whom are fleeing their homes or facing shortages of food and medical care. The international community continues to call for a lasting solution through inclusive dialogue involving all parties.
