Former President Donald Trump has drawn criticism from a key segment of his supporter base following his recent suggestion that Palestinians in Gaza could be relocated to Jordan or Egypt. The proposal has sparked backlash from Arab-Americans for Trump, a group that played a pivotal role in securing his victory in the 2020 election.
In a statement released on Sunday, Dr. Bishara Bahbah, the national chair of Arab-Americans for Trump, condemned the suggestion, stating:
“We firmly reject any notion, whether voluntary or forced, to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt or Jordan. Such an idea undermines the principles of justice and sovereignty.”
Tensions Rise with a Crucial Voter Group
Arab-American voters were instrumental in Trump’s narrow victories in states like Michigan, particularly in cities such as Dearborn and Hamtramck, where small margins had a significant impact. The group’s statement marks an early sign of growing tension between the former president and this key demographic.
Dr. Bahbah, a Palestinian-American businessman, has been a staunch advocate for Arab-American engagement in U.S. politics. He emphasized the importance of a sustainable and just resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“We strongly support a two-state solution as the only viable path to peace. Palestinians and Israelis must coexist as neighbors, with mutual respect and recognition,” the statement read.
A Call for Rebuilding Gaza and Peace Efforts
The group also acknowledged President Trump’s role in facilitating a ceasefire in Gaza, urging him to focus on rebuilding efforts and setting the stage for long-term peace. They called on the former president and his advisors to prioritize initiatives that would lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
“Rebuilding Gaza and launching a peace process that culminates in the creation of a Palestinian state is imperative. This is not just a political necessity but a moral obligation,” Dr. Bahbah added.
 Shifting Dynamics in Arab-American Support
This statement underscores the growing complexities of maintaining support within a diverse coalition. While Arab-Americans for Trump have appreciated the former president’s efforts in some areas, the recent remarks on Gaza relocation have clearly struck a nerve.
As the political landscape evolves, sustaining support from influential groups like Arab-Americans will require navigating sensitive issues with care and a commitment to equitable solutions. Whether President Trump’s rhetoric aligns with these expectations remains to be seen.
