The President of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye, has declared that the ruling party, CNDD-FDD, will never relinquish power, asserting that it came to lead the country through a hard-fought struggle.

He made these remarks on May 27, 2025, while the party was campaigning in Musigati Commune.
In his speech, Ndayishimiye stated: “We took control of the country through great hardship; it wasn’t easy for us, and we cannot allow ourselves to give it up because we came from very far to get here.”
He said that before CNDD-FDD came to power, Burundi was in chaos, but now the country has been rebuilt with democracy and security.
He added that Burundi is increasingly respected internationally, and that Burundians living abroad are being treated with greater dignity.
Although Ndayishimiye wants his party to remain in power, the 20 years that CNDD-FDD has ruled the country have not brought significant improvement to the lives of its citizens.
Burundi continues to face major challenges, including: A fuel shortage that has lasted more than three years, A sugar crisis, A sharp increase in the price of basic goods, And an ongoing foreign currency shortage that remains unresolved.
All of these issues continue to push Burundi toward the bottom of the list of the world’s poorest countries.
