Reports from the Fizi region in the South Kivu province indicate that the Maï-Maï militia, in collaboration with Burundian troops, have launched heavy attacks on the Red-Tabara rebel group, which opposes the government of Burundi.
Since Sunday and continuing into Tuesday morning, intense offensives have been mounted against the Red-Tabara rebel group, which is fighting against the CNDD-FDD regime in Burundi.
These attacks, involving both Burundian forces and Maï-Maï fighters, have primarily targeted the Red-Tabara positions in the Bibwe area and other locations within the region.
Bibwe is located in the Lulenge sector, within the Fizi territory, in the southern part near the western center of Minembwe.
Kivupride reports from local residents that “as we were previously informed, CNCPS, led by General Hamuri Yakutumba, in cooperation with Burundian troops, has continued to launch attacks on Red-Tabara forces.”
The source further confirms: “These attacks are being directed at the Red-Tabara strongholds located in the Bibwe area in Fizi.”
The information also highlights that these attacks primarily occur during the early morning hours, with relative calm prevailing during the daytime.
Interestingly, the reports also mention that the Burundian forces and Maï-Maï fighters, after conducting these assaults, have been looting the livestock of local communities from the Pfulero and Nyindu ethnic groups living in the affected areas.
Among the looted animals, reports indicate that goats, chickens, and sheep have been taken, and crops belonging to local farmers have also been stolen.
The Burundian military’s operations against the Red-Tabara rebels were widely reported last year, particularly in the Tombwe area within the Mwenga territory. Currently, the attacks have shifted to Lulenge in the Fizi territory, where it is said that the Red-Tabara group has relocated its bases.
