A Congolese national living abroad, who identifies as a supporter of M23 and Twirwaneho, has shared a message offering strategic advice to the Movement group following their recent capture of Goma.
“Good morning, good afternoon to all. I have been closely following the events unfolding in our homeland. When I say ‘our homeland,’ I mean North and South Kivu. I am a firm supporter of M23 and Twirwaneho.”
He stated that he currently resides in the diaspora and chose to remain anonymous for security reasons.
: “Looking back to 2017, the war in our homeland (Mulenge) initially seemed political, and I believed it would be resolved swiftly through political means. However, things changed drastically in 2021 and 2022 when the conflict reignited in North Kivu. President Félix Tshisekedi responded by inviting Burundian troops, Wazalendo militias, and the FDLR into the fight, turning the war into an ethnic conflict between Hutu and Tutsi, even though both sides avoid openly acknowledging this reality.”
This shift in the nature of the conflict, he explained, led him to offer strategic advice to M23.
“Now, after capturing Goma and Minova, M23 must carefully plan their next steps to counter what Tshisekedi has achieved diplomatically.”
He emphasized that Western powers tend to support the strongest side, advising M23 to focus on winning the hearts of the Banyamulenge, whom he claims were misled by Tshisekedi. Additionally, he urged the group to mobilize and integrate local youth into their ranks.
He suggested that M23 should intervene to protect the Banyamulenge communities living in the highlands of Mulenge, who face frequent attacks from the FARDC, FDLR, and Maï-Maï militias. By doing so, he argued, M23 would not only strengthen ties with Twirwaneho but also gain control over the entire Mulenge highlands.
“Once that happens, every Banyamulenge, no matter where they are, will naturally align with M23 and Twirwaneho.”
He further claimed that this strategy would weaken the armed groups working alongside President Tshisekedi’s military, particularly those responsible for the killings and destruction of Banyamulenge villages. Additionally, he suggested that it would reduce Burundi’s military support to the Congolese army and the FDLR.
“The Mulenge highlands hold strategic significance. Securing them will demoralize the Burundian government, which has been assisting Tshisekedi’s forces.”
However, he warned against rushing to take the Bukavu-Uvira route , arguing that doing so would strengthen General Pacifique Masunzu, who might call for further Burundian military reinforcements and Wazalendo fighters from the highlands. Instead, he recommended that M23 first consolidate their control over Mulenge before advancing.
He concluded his message with a note of admiration and encouragement: “I deeply respect and support the M23 and Twirwaneho family. You are brave men who refused to be humiliated. May God grant you everlasting victory. Thank you, and may you always remain blessed.”
