Donald Trump to Take Presidential Oath Indoors Amid Extreme Cold

Donald Trump, set to be sworn in as President of the United States on Monday, January 20, 2025, has announced that his inaugural address will be delivered inside the US Capitol building rather than outdoors, citing the extreme cold weather forecasted.

Adjustments to the Inauguration Ceremony

In addition to moving the speech indoors, the traditional parade and other outdoor festivities have been relocated to the Capitol One Arena, a venue with a capacity of 20,000, located about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) from the Capitol. This arena will also host three separate inaugural celebrations later in the day.

For attendees unable to access the US Capitol during Trump’s address, arrangements have been made to stream the event live at the Capitol One Arena.

Historical Context and Safety Concerns

Trump’s decision echoes that of former President Ronald Reagan, who in 1985 also moved his inauguration ceremony indoors due to severe cold. Reflecting on the importance of safety, Trump shared a message on Truth Social, stating:
“I don’t want to see people suffering in the cold or facing any issues because of the weather. If you plan to attend any events, please dress warmly and appropriately.”

He added, “Everyone will be safe and happy. Together, we will once again make America great.”

A Historical Reminder

Trump’s decision to prioritize safety serves as a reminder of the risks associated with extreme weather during inaugurations. In 1841, William Henry Harrison delivered the longest inaugural address in US history in freezing temperatures, which led to pneumonia and his death just a month later, marking the shortest presidency in American history.

Trump’s emphasis on safety and comfort reflects both a nod to historical precedents and a pragmatic approach to ensuring a memorable yet secure inauguration day.
