After years of relative silence, Joseph Kabila Kabange, the former President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has returned to the political scene. He is now one of the most talked-about figures involved in secret negotiations that are shaping a major shift in the country.

The high-stakes meeting held in Goma between Kabila and leaders of the AFC/M23 coalition convinced many that turbulent times are ahead and that, whatever happens, “nothing will be a surprise.”
Reliable sources report that Kabila has officially decided to no longer cooperate with President Félix Tshisekedi’s government. He has expressed his willingness to support the changes being prepared by the AFC/M23 alliance and other political and military groups aligned with it.
According to information obtained by KIVU PRIDE, the former President has already held a high-level strategy meeting with AFC/M23 leaders and his inner circle.
It is said that in the coming days, Joseph Kabila plans to make public what he intends to do, as his relationship with the Kinshasa regime has now broken down.
This is also backed by intelligence reports indicating that several soldiers, police officers, and other security agents still follow Kabila’s directives and consider him the “true leader”, as public dissatisfaction with the Kinshasa government continues to grow.
Bertrand Bisimwa, the President of AFC/M23, recently declared that the time for asking the Kinshasa government for solutions is over. In a speech marked by defiance and determination for change, he stated that the coalition had chosen the path of liberating the people from a repressive regime that ignores their well-being.
He said: “We are no longer requesting answers from the Kinshasa government. That phase is behind us. We are now liberators of the oppressed.”
These words are seen as a political and military declaration of war. AFC/M23 has emphasized that the time has come for sweeping change change that will reach even Kinshasa.
Due to its relative security compared to other parts of the DRC, Goma has become the headquarters for AFC/M23 and other opposition groups. It was in Goma that Kabila met with the coalition’s top leaders, including Corneille Nangaa, the former head of the electoral commission and now Secretary General of the alliance.
Nangaa said: “Kabila has returned to a region of the country where politicians are not oppressed, where people are not sentenced to death, and where there is no ethnic hatred or discrimination. In Goma, there is freedom, democracy, and a pursuit of truth.”
This sentiment was echoed by Col. Willy Ngoma, the military spokesperson for AFC/M23, who described Kabila as “a soldier of the people”, someone who stands against inequality, corruption, and the clique-driven discrimination present in the current regime.
As AFC/M23’s influence continues to grow across areas like Rutshuru, Masisi, and Goma, the coalition’s leaders have made it clear that Kinshasa is their next target.
In a new statement, Nangaa said: “Goma is where the journey to rebuild a new Congo begins. We have risen to challenge the regime in Kinshasa, which relies on death, corruption, and discrimination.”
He also affirmed that the people of Kinshasa should no longer remain hostages to a government plagued by embezzlement, repression of dissent, and manipulation of international organizations to silence the truth.
When you analyze the language used by AFC/M23 leaders, the ongoing military training activities, Kabila’s meetings with former military commanders, and this critical strategy session with AFC/M23 leaders, it paints a clear picture: something major is being prepared.
A political analyst who spoke with a KIVU PRIDE journalist summarized it this way:
“This high-level meeting showed that a coup d’état won’t come as a surprise!”
