Escalating violence in the DRC: targeted massacres against civilian populations

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is once again the scene of deadly attacks targeting innocent populations. The Kinshasa regime, without fear of international repercussions, is multiplying offensives against demilitarized villages, using drones, Sukhoi fighter jets, and cannons in a systematic campaign of destruction.

The Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), supported by elements of the FNDB, FDLR, and the Wazalendo militia, have recently intensified their attacks on villages predominantly inhabited by the Banyamulenge people. These populations, often wrongly assimilated to Rwandans, have become the target of systematic violence, thus fueling a cycle of ethnically motivated persecution.

These acts of war against defenseless civilians constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law. The complicit silence of the international community in the face of these massacres is alarming and raises questions about the responsibility of states that support or turn a blind eye to the abuses committed by the Congolese regime.

In response to this situation, the Alliance of Forces for Change (AFC/M23) has declared that it will not remain passive in the face of these massacres and will take responsibility for protecting civilians. This statement marks an escalation in tensions that risks further exacerbating the already complex conflict in eastern DRC.

The world can no longer ignore the suffering of innocent populations caught in the crossfire of political and military interests. An urgent and proportional response from the international community is necessary to put an end to these atrocities and ensure the safety of all Congolese citizens, regardless of their ethnic background.
