Joseph Kabila’s decision to return to Congolese soil, rather than submit to forced exile, is widely welcomed by the local population. In Goma, he is being received in an environment that promotes peace, security, and unity core values championed by the Congo River Alliance. For the people, his presence symbolizes a renewed commitment to national reconciliation and the country’s development.

Since February, the city of Goma has hosted several key delegations and prominent figures who came to witness the progress made by the AFC in restoring security to eastern DRC. The reception of the joint ECC-CENCO delegation was a particularly powerful moment, symbolizing unity and intercommunity solidarity.

Goma, often referred to as the gateway to Congo, remains open to all those who wish to engage in political activities in a manner that respects republican values. The city is positioning itself as a place of dialogue, unity, and reconstruction.

As the country faces severe security challenges, Joseph Kabila’s return comes at a crucial time. Though he has yet to officially confirm his arrival, his intent to travel to Goma was revealed by Lawrence Kanyuka, spokesperson for the M23, during a speech criticizing the current political climate.

Meanwhile, Colonel Willy Ngoma, M23’s military spokesperson, expressed readiness to warmly welcome the former president, referring to him as a “soldier of the people.” This declaration comes shortly after the M23 regained control of the strategic city of Goma, intensifying speculation that Kabila could act as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between the rebel group and the central government.

At 53, Joseph Kabila has recently re-emerged on the political scene, even as the Senate lifted his parliamentary immunity at the request of the military prosecutor’s office. He faces unconfirmed accusations of involvement in M23 activities. In March, Kabila denied these claims, stating that an alliance with the group could have “changed the game,” while asserting that he has never taken a political stance in the conflict .

Despite the allegations, he still commands a loyal base and remains a powerful figure in Congolese politics. His experience in conflict resolution and political dialogue could make him a key player in leading the country toward a peaceful solution.

The DRC is in urgent need of political cooperation to overcome chronic instability. Joseph Kabila’s return may offer a unique opportunity to initiate inclusive dialogue, bring together the nation’s divided factions, and work toward lasting peace.

The Congo River Alliance reiterates its call for unity, the rejection of dictatorship and division, and a collective mobilization for the advancement of the country and the well-being of its people.

Welcome back, President Joseph Kabila. Welcome to all those who aspire to a reconciled, just, and prosperous Congo. Together, we can build a better future.
