Goma celebrates International Women’s Day: a call for peace, equality, and empowerment

International Women’s Day, celebrated every March 8, holds significant importance in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This day serves as an opportunity to highlight the challenges women in the region face particularly due to ongoing conflicts while also celebrating their contributions and promoting their empowerment.

In 2024, International Women’s Day in Goma was observed under the national theme: “Increasing Resources for Women and Girls in Peace for a Gender-Equal Congo.” The Minister of Gender, Family, and Children, Mireille Masangu Bibi Muloko, officially launched the month of women’s activities during a ceremony at the Serena Hotel in Goma. Attendees, dressed in black, expressed their solidarity with victims of conflicts in eastern DRC, symbolizing mourning and compassion for those who have suffered.

During the event, Minister Masangu emphasized the importance of creating favorable conditions for women’s development, stressing that peace and security are essential for their empowerment. She called for increased investment in women and girls to advance gender equality in the DRC.

In 2023, women in Goma also marked the occasion by wearing black clothing and carrying bags as a symbolic protest against the impact of war on their lives. They urged for the restoration of peace and security in a region plagued by violence and mass displacement.

As part of the March 8 celebrations, initiatives promoting women’s participation in sports have also been introduced. In 2024, the organization All Stars, which advocates for women’s rights through sports, hosted a basketball gala match at Goma’s Omnisport’s Stadium between the North Kivu team and Chaux Sport from South Kivu. This event aimed to encourage women to engage in sports while fostering unity among women from different provinces of the DRC.

In 2025, International Women’s Day in Goma is expected to continue addressing women’s challenges and aspirations. Celebrations may include conferences, workshops, and cultural events to promote gender equality, economic empowerment, and women’s political participation. Additionally, sports and artistic initiatives could be organized to foster expression and solidarity among women.

International Women’s Day in Goma remains a crucial occasion to raise awareness of women’s rights, celebrate their achievements, and strengthen efforts toward gender equality in a region facing numerous challenges.
