The military police of the AFC/M23 are now faced with a significant security challenge: curbing the widespread circulation of illicit weapons. This alarming situation is a direct consequence of the Congolese government’s large-scale armament campaign, which has been fueling militia groups such as Wazalendo. By providing weapons to these irregular forces, the government has inadvertently contributed to the surge in crime and violence, making it increasingly difficult to maintain stability in the region.

For years, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has operated under the guise of supporting peace efforts. However, there have been persistent allegations of collaboration between MONUSCO and armed groups, raising questions about its effectiveness and neutrality. Many argue that, rather than ensuring security, MONUSCO has indirectly enabled criminal activities by working alongside these factions under the pretense of assisting the Congolese government.

If the international community is truly committed to restoring peace in eastern Congo, it must take decisive action. Instead of continuing to fund MONUSCO, which has failed to dismantle these criminal networks, financial resources should be redirected toward initiatives that genuinely contribute to stability. One such alternative is the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which has demonstrated a more proactive approach in addressing security concerns and combating organized crime.

As the situation in Goma continues to deteriorate, it remains to be seen whether global actors will recognize the urgent need for as strategic shift in their approach to security and governance in the region.
