Joseph Kabila Kabange, the former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has stated that his country is on the verge of exploding due to the ongoing internal conflict, which could also affect the entire region.
This information was published by South Africa’s Sunday Times, which reported that Joseph Kabila recently remarked on the worsening situation in the DRC.
The newspaper quoted him saying: “The situation in Congo has significantly deteriorated, to the point that the country is on the brink of exploding due to internal conflict, which could destabilize the entire region.”
Kabila further stated that “if the root causes of these conflicts are not properly addressed, any efforts to resolve them will be in vain.”
According to Kabila, the main reason behind this crisis is “the evident willingness of the current government to violate the agreements reached during the inter-Congolese dialogue in Sun City, which led to the 2006 constitutional framework.”
He emphasized that “any attempt to resolve this issue while ignoring its root causes will not bring lasting peace.”
So far, Kinshasa has not responded to Joseph Kabila’s remarks. However, the current government accuses him of supporting the M23 movement group, which is fighting against the government and currently controls parts of South Kivu and North Kivu provinces.
President Félix Tshisekedi took office in 2019, succeeding Joseph Kabila. Since then, armed conflicts have erupted and persisted to this day.
Many analysts believe that Tshisekedi refused to honor secret agreements he had made with Joseph Kabila before taking power, which has contributed to his administration’s severe security challenges.
Last week, Tshisekedi announced a restructuring of the country’s military to strengthen its fight against the M23 movement , who currently control large areas in the eastern part of the country.
