Two days ago, M23 seized Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu and the second most important city in eastern DRC.
Following this victory, M23 fighters pushed back the coalition forces aligned with the Kinshasa government in various locations, including Nyangenzi, Kamanyola, Mugogo, and Ngweshe in Walungu territory.
This development followed intense battles between M23 and the coalition forces fighting on behalf of the Kinshasa government. The coalition comprises the Burundian army, the Congolese army (FARDC), and armed groups such as the FDLR and Wazalendo, according to reports from an M23 fighter.
M23 fighters have now entered Walungu, the birthplace of President Félix Tshisekedi’s wife, Nyakeru, as well as Vital Kamerhe, a prominent political leader in Kinshasa.
According to kivupride.com, which obtained information from an M23 , the FARDC forces initially fled, leaving Burundian troops to defend the area. However, the Burundian forces were eventually overwhelmed and also retreated, allowing M23 to expand its territory.
M23 entered South Kivu after capturing Minova, a town in Kalehe territory, at the beginning of last month.
Currently, the movement has taken control of many areas in the province, including its largest city.
Meanwhile, M23 continues advancing into other regions, dealing heavy blows to Tshisekedi’s forces. The group is now approaching the strategic city of Uvira, indicating a possible next target in its military campaign.
