M23 Repels Attack by Congolese Forces in Nyangenzi, South Kivu

Reports from residents of Nyangenzi, in Walungu Territory, South Kivu, indicate that the coalition of the Congolese army and allied forces launched an attack on M23 fighters in the area. However, the offensive was met with strong resistance, forcing the attackers to retreat.

According to written reports obtained from locals in Nyangenzi, the assault took place on the morning of Sunday, March 23, 2025. The Congolese military coalition targeted M23 positions and areas populated by civilians.

The report, shared with Minembwe Capital News, details that the attack was carried out from three strategic routes: Businga, Murenda, and the vicinity of Twaweza Secondary School.

It states: “Wazalendo, Burundian troops, and FARDC forces attacked M23 in Nyangenzi and surrounding civilian areas from three directions—Businga, Murenda, and the Twaweza school compound.”

However, the attackers advancing through Businga and Murenda were swiftly pushed back and suffered heavy losses. The force approaching from the Twaweza school managed to penetrate M23’s lines, even reaching the Catholic parish in Nyangenzi, but was ultimately repelled.

The report further claims that the assault from the Twaweza school ended in disaster for the Congolese coalition, as many fighters, including their commanding officer, were killed.

“Those attacking from Businga and Murenda were badly defeated, while those advancing from Twaweza suffered heavy casualties, including their commander,” the report states.

The battle reportedly began at 4:00 AM and lasted until 6:00 PM on Sunday. Despite the attack, the report affirms that Nyangenzi remains under M23 control and is now calm.

“The fighting started early in the morning at 4 AM and ended at 6 PM. Currently, the situation is calm, and M23 continues to control the entire Nyangenzi area.”
