The military spokesperson of the M23 Movement, Colonel Willy Ngoma, declared that those who think they will eradicate the Banyamulenge people are gravely mistaken and that the Banyamulenge will soon be able to move freely as they wish.

This statement from the M23 leader came after Twirwaneho confirmed the death of General Rukunda Michel, also known as Makanika, who was reportedly killed by a drone strike launched by the Congolese military in Gakangala.
Makanika was the supreme leader of Twirwaneho, a self-defense group, as the Kinshasa government continuously attacks the Banyamulenge with the aim of exterminating and displacing them.
“Tell those who think they will eliminate the Banyamulenge people in the Democratic Republic of Congo that they are mistaken. The Banyamulenge are Congolese in their ancestral land, and soon they will move freely and be allowed to go wherever they wish in the country.”
Col. Makanika was killed by a FARDC drone, as Twirwaneho revealed in a statement released last night. In the statement, they specified that the drone strike came from Kisangani.
The late General Makanika dedicated his life to defending the rights of the Banyamulenge people, who continue to face oppression and are denied their rightful place as Congolese citizens.
Twirwaneho also stated that the fight for self-defense is ongoing and that the foundation and efforts laid down by General Rukunda Michel will not be dismantled until the Banyamulenge achieve lasting peace.
