The Government of Burundi has voiced its concerns to the United Nations Security Council over the capture of Goma, considered the capital of North Kivu province, by the M23 Movement.
Zephyrin Maniratanga, Burundi’s ambassador to the UN, stated that Goma fell to the M23 early Monday morning, warning that the city is now on the brink of chaos.
In his address to representatives at the UN Security Council, Ambassador Maniratanga said, “The city of Goma is heading into turmoil. He further expressed concerns, stating,”The security situation in Goma will deteriorate further, creating instability across the entire region.
The diplomat criticized the UN Security Council for failing to provide adequate support to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which continues to struggle against the M23 Movement. He added, “The principle of national sovereignty is being violated.”
Burundi’s military forces have been collaborating with the DRC army, as well as groups such as Wazalendo and FDLR, for nearly three years in efforts to combat the M23. However, these efforts have yielded little success, as they have consistently been overpowered by the M23.
In a recent clash, M23 forces defeated Burundi’s troops, forcing them to retreat to South Kivu after being routed in North Kivu.
The capture of Goma comes as M23 had recently taken control of several strategically important towns, including Sake, Minova, and others, heightening regional tensions and uncertainty.
