On Wednesday morning, M23 movement were seen patrolling the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) side of the border with Rwanda, ensuring security after capturing Goma. While M23 forces monitored the situation in the DRC, Rwandan soldiers remained stationed on their side of the border as usual.

Security in Goma began to stabilize on Tuesday evening after M23 movement defeated FARDC troops and allied militias that had resisted surrender.

M23 announced that they had taken control of key infrastructure in Goma, including Goma International Airport. Their swift takeover restored calm, allowing residents to resume their daily activities.

By around 11:00 AM, at the La Corniche border crossing in Rubavu, M23 soldiers were seen securing the DRC side. They reopened the border by cutting chains and padlocks that had sealed it.

One M23 soldier briefly spoke to our journalist, simply stating, “I am happy, I am happy,” before resuming his duties.

Meanwhile, movement across the La Corniche border resumed, with some Congolese refugees in Rwanda beginning to return home.

Additionally, Rwanda facilitated the evacuation of over 40 World Bank employees and their families from Goma, as it had previously done for MONUSCO personnel.

More than 280 Romanian mercenaries who had been fighting in the DRC are also expected to arrive in Rwanda on Wednesday. Upon reaching Rubavu, they will be transported to Kigali, where arrangements will be made for their repatriation.
