Minembwe: Armed resistance and the struggle for survival in the DRC

On February 21, 2025, a decisive turning point was announced by the Republican Movement for the Dignity of the People (MRDP) – Twirwaneho. This movement claims to have liberated Minembwe and its surroundings from the armed forces oppressing them, emphasizing an existential struggle for the survival of the Banyamulenge community in the High and Middle Plateau of South Kivu.

According to a statement released by the MRDP-Twirwaneho, the Banyamulenge community is allegedly facing extinction due to systematic attacks carried out by local ethnic militias with the support of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC). These attacks, which reportedly began in April 2017, have caused significant loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and mass displacement of populations.

In response to this situation, the MRDP-Twirwaneho asserts that their struggle has restored a semblance of peace and security for their community. In support of this initiative, the MRDP has praised the efforts of the Congolese Forces Army (AFC) and its armed wing, the Congolese Revolutionary Army (ARC).

In its appeal, the MRDP invites all Congolese concerned with justice to join this revolutionary march for the restoration of a rule of law and the protection of the fundamental rights of all citizens. It emphasizes the importance of a collective struggle for dignity, peace, and equality before the law, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the DRC.

However, this announcement risks exacerbating tensions in a region already marked by long-standing ethnic and political conflicts. The international community is closely monitoring the situation as the DRC seeks sustainable solutions to establish inclusive and lasting peace.
