Goma, April 12, 2025 Residents of Goma were jolted by gunfire late Thursday night, as heavy shooting erupted around 10 p.m. in the neighborhoods of Lac Vert and Keshero. In response to rising concern and confusion, the Governor of North Kivu, Bahati Musanga Erasto, issued an official statement early Friday morning to clarify the situation and reassure the public.
According to the Governor, the gunfire was the result of armed clashes between the Congolese Revolutionary Army (ARC), composed of AFC/M23 forces, and a coalition of armed groups including the Wazalendo militia, FDLR, and rogue FARDC elements. The coalition reportedly attempted to attack government positions, but were swiftly repelled by ARC forces.
“The enemy forces that disrupted your peace for over an hour during the night have been driven out,” the statement read. “There is no longer cause for alarm. Your army is fully committed to ensuring your peace and security.”
Governor Bahati urged residents to remain calm, emphasizing that the situation is under control and that security forces are vigilant and determined to protect the population.
The brief but intense exchange highlights the ongoing volatility in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where multiple armed groups continue to challenge government authority. Still, the Governor’s message was clear: the military stands ready to maintain order and stability.
