Not just war: How young people are shaping the M23 narrative

As the Great Lakes region continues to grapple with issues of insecurity and governance, a segment of the youth has chosen not to remain silent. Through various means, they have shown their support for AFC/M23, driven by a shared vision: building a peaceful nation governed by justice and inclusivity.

Some youth made the bold decision to join the armed forces supporting M23. These young men and women see the struggle as a path to achieving meaningful change, fighting with the hope of securing a stable country rooted in freedom and justice for all.

Others chose the battleground of words. They turned to social media platforms, YouTube channels, blogs, and independent radio to voice their support for AFC/M23, explaining why they view the movement as a fight for human rights. These youths played a key role in informing the public and offering alternative narratives to official accounts.

In a more creative and unconventional approach, some expressed their support through fashion and hairstyles. Unique styles like “Coupe AFC” and “Coupe Nangaa” have emerged as symbols of solidarity, courage, and pride in the fight for change. For many, these looks have become emblems of resistance and identity.

Despite their varied methods of expression, all share a common goal: advocating for a nation that respects the rights of its people, eliminates injustice, and empowers young people. Many supporters say they are standing up against a system they see as corrupt, indulgent, and disconnected from the people’s needs.

This generation of youth is proving that change isn’t only driven by bullets it can also come from voices, styles, and bold ideas. It is a powerful reminder that politics has found its way into all spheres of life, whether through media, fashion, or the battlefield.
