On Monday, a video circulated on social media showing Macron with Brigitte at the Hanoi airport in Vietnam, where they were on a week-long tour of Southeast Asia. In the footage, there is a moment that appears to show Brigitte slapping him in the face.
President Macron appeared to hold back his reaction after the incident, just before the couple exited the plane.
The French presidency dismissed the footage as fake, but major French media outlets confirmed that the video is authentic.
One of the individuals who was traveling with the couple said there had been a disagreement between Macron and Brigitte prior to the incident, although they did not provide detailed information.
When speaking to journalists that day, Macron explained that he and his wife had simply been playing, as they often do.
He said, “We were just playing, as we sometimes do.”
He went on to say that this wasn’t the first time people had misinterpreted his videos.
He added, “Some once claimed I shared a bag of cocaine with other politicians, others said I fought with the President of Türkiye. Now they’re saying my wife slapped me… All of this is false. People need to clear the path for truth.”
Emmanuel Macron, 47, has been with Brigitte Macron, 72, for over 15 years. She was once his teacher.
His partner is 25 years older than him. Since the beginning of their relationship, many rumors have circulated about them, including those questioning Brigitte’s gender, rumors they have consistently denied.
