President Ruto described the ongoing war in Eastern DRC as a severe humanitarian crisis.
“The continued disruption of peace and security in the DRC is a matter of grave concern. The humanitarian situation is worsening due to intensified military activities, including the closure of Goma’s airspace,” he stated.
The Kenyan leader called for dialogue as the path to resolving the conflict.
“As the Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), I urge all parties involved in the Luanda dialogue, along with my brothers, President Félix Tshisekedi and President Paul Kagame—both of whom I spoke to this evening—to heed the voices of the people in our region calling for peace, as well as the international community,” he said.
President Ruto further revealed that, after consultations with his counterparts in the EAC, they agreed to convene a meeting of the bloc’s heads of state within 48 hours to deliberate on actionable solutions.
His remarks come amidst reports of intense fighting near the city of Goma, with the M23 Movement declaring its intent to take control of the city.
