Revealed: What FARDC Soldiers, Burundians, Wazalendo, and FDLR Are Doing While Wearing AFC/M23 Uniforms

Newly confirmed information reveals that the Kinshasa government is deploying soldiers from the national army (FARDC), fighters from armed groups such as Wazalendo, FDLR, and even Burundian troops, and dressing them in AFC/M23 uniforms as part of a deceptive strategy aimed at misdirecting public opinion and undermining peace talks.

These deceptive acts are being exposed at a time when movements advocating for change and peace are showing strong commitment to ending the decades-long conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, some political and military leaders in Congo appear uninterested in peace, instead opting for tactics intended to tarnish reputations and stir unrest.

Photos and other forms of evidence shared by local residents and independent organizations show individuals dressed in AFC/M23 uniforms and insignias, who are later identified as FARDC soldiers or allied militia members.

In some instances, these disguised forces carry out attacks on civilians, committing killings and other violent acts, all intended to place blame on AFC/M23 and falsely accuse its forces of crimes they did not commit.

A regional analyst who spoke to ITYAZO stated: “These are common tactics used when someone wants to discredit their opponent. When you realize you’re not winning on the battlefield of peace, you destroy the playing field instead.”

Experts suggest these actions are aimed at destroying international trust in ongoing negotiations, so that Kinshasa can continue using military force rather than pursuing peaceful solutions.

Regional political leaders and peacekeeping authorities working in the Great Lakes Region are being urged to remain vigilant and not to be misled by falsified narratives and staged photos resulting from these deceptive tactics disguised in AFC/M23 uniforms.

This confirms what many have been saying, that the DRC crisis is deeply rooted in leadership that does not genuinely desire lasting peace, and instead uses armed groups and division as political tools.

People in eastern Congo continue to express deep exhaustion and sorrow over the unending war, as families are displaced, killed, looted, or subjected to sexual violence.

While the international community keeps urging all parties to prioritize peace, it is becoming clear that some actors are actively working to prevent meaningful negotiations from reaching their goals. Yet, as more of these deceitful schemes are uncovered, public trust in truth and hope for peace continues to rise.
