Despite moments of brilliance and stretches of dominance, Mikel Arteta’s men once again finished second this time behind a resurgent Liverpool side. It was the third straight year the Gunners had ended as runners-up. And while consistency at the top is something most clubs crave, for Arsenal supporters, it has become a symbol of unfulfilled promise.

Arsenal began the campaign with a quiet confidence. Arteta had crafted a side built on balance, discipline, and explosive width. The return of Declan Rice and the rise of William Saliba at the back gave the team structure, while the midfield anchored by Martin Ødegaard looked capable of dictating games against any opponent.

Early-season victories reinforced the belief that this was finally their year. But football is cruel. And Premier League titles are not won in September. It wasn’t a single loss or catastrophic dip in form. The unraveling came gradually an accumulation of missed chances, untimely injuries, and draws that should have been wins.

Kai Havertz, one of Arsenal’s key figures in midfield, was sidelined at a critical point in the run-in. Disciplinary issues crept in. Fatigue set in. And then came the scoreboard pressure from Liverpool a side that simply wouldn’t stop winning.

By the final whistle of the season, the title had slipped away again. Arsenal finished with 74 points, a full 10 behind the champions.

Let the numbers tell the story:

  • 2022/23: 2nd place – 5 points behind Manchester City
  • 2023/24: 2nd place – 2 points behind Manchester City
  • 2024/25: 2nd place – 10 points behind Liverpool

The emotional toll on supporters has been immense. Outside the Emirates Stadium after the final game, the mood was heavy. Some fans walked silently, others wiped away tears. For many, this season felt like the onethat golden chance to lift the Premier League trophy after a 21-year drought.

“We were supposed to end the pain this year,” one lifelong supporter muttered, clutching a scarf as if it were a lifeline. “It hurts more every time.”

Arsenal’s squad is undoubtedly talented. But questions remain chief among them: Who will score the goals? With no player hitting double digits in league goals, the Gunners lacked the clinical edge of a true title winner.

Sources close to the club suggest that Arsenal are in advanced talks with strikers Benjamin Šeško and Viktor Gyökeres, aiming to solve that issue before August. Several fringe players, including Fábio Vieira, Tierney, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, are expected to depart.

This was not a failure. This was a painful, character-defining chapter.Arsenal are building something real but glory has no shortcuts. This season will sting. But if it fuels the fire to go one step further, then maybe just maybe this heartbreak will have meaning.

For now, the trophy eludes them. But the belief? That’s still very much alive in North London.?
