The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, has expressed his frustration with three African countries that opposed the United Nations’ decision to condemn Rwanda. Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Somalia, which hold non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council, along with Guyana, recently voted against a resolution accusing Rwanda of sending troops into eastern DRC and condemning its actions.

Tshisekedi, who recently attended an international security conference in Munich, Germany, stated that if these African countries had voted in favor of the resolution, the UN Security Council could have condemned Rwanda.
“We have three African countries representing us as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, and they did not vote in favor of a resolution condemning Rwanda’s actions in the DRC,” he said.
The Congolese president emphasized that the failure of these three African nations to support the resolution reflected the African Union’s inability to achieve unity and cooperation.
“Think about it: we spend day and night hoping for unity, brotherhood, and cooperation in Africa, but the reality shows that we are incapable of achieving these ideals,” he added.
Before the UN Security Council meeting and other discussions, Rwanda repeatedly reaffirmed that it had no troops in eastern DRC, dismissing the accusations as baseless and part of a smear campaign intended to divert attention from governance issues within the DRC.
The Rwandan government also highlighted that the DRC continues to collaborate with the FDLR, a terrorist group that has long posed a threat to Rwanda. This collaboration has been confirmed by multiple reports, including those from UN experts.
The UN Security Council, composed of 15 countries, includes five permanent members: the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and China. Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Somalia are the only African representatives.
Many voices are questioning why Tshisekedi so often focuses on Rwanda while ignoring his own country’s internal challenges, including the collaboration of his armed forces with the FDLR terrorist group.
