The announcement was made on Monday, February 3, 2025, through a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC.
The advisory cites growing security concerns in Kinshasa, prompting the embassy to reduce its staff.
“The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa continues to downsize its workforce,” the statement reads.
It further advises American citizens to exit the DRC as soon as possible via commercial routes.
Additionally, the embassy has temporarily suspended several services, including visa interviews.
This development comes amid intense fighting in the eastern regions of the DRC between the M23 rebel group and government-backed forces.
Currently, the M23 controls large portions of North and South Kivu provinces.Just recently, India also issued a similar warning, urging its nationals in Bukavu to evacuate, citing the proximity of ongoing clashes between the M23 and Congolese forces, which are now within about 20 kilometers of the city.
Moreover, personnel from international organizations, including MONUSCO, have started fleeing Bukavu and other areas in South Kivu.
The conflict between M23 and the Congolese army remains fierce, with battles ongoing in Kalehe territory as the movement advances toward Bukavu.
