UN Denounces Attack on Peacekeepers in Central African Republic, Calls for Justice

UN Security Council Condemns Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Central African Republic the United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned an attack on UN peacekeepers in the Central African Republic (CAR) that resulted in the death of a Kenyan peacekeeper.

According to the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in CAR (MINUSCA), an “unidentified armed group” ambushed the peacekeepers during a long-range patrol in Tabane village, Haut-Mbomou Prefecture, on Friday morning.

In a statement released Sunday, the Security Council extended its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, the Kenyan government, and the United Nations. The council also emphasized that attacks on peacekeepers could amount to war crimes and reminded all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres echoed the condemnation, urging CAR authorities to take all necessary measures to identify those responsible and ensure they are swiftly brought to justice.

This tragic incident highlights the persistent security challenges faced by UN peacekeepers in the region as they work to maintain stability and protect civilians.
