The United Nations has called on the M23 movement to reopen Goma International Airport, which is currently under their control following their opposition to the government of President Félix Tshisekedi.

This appeal was made by Bruno Lemarquis, the UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in a statement issued on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
The statement urged the M23 to immediately reopen the airport to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians displaced by ongoing conflict. The assistance is primarily intended for those affected by clashes between the M23 and the Congolese armed forces (FARDC).
The statement further highlighted the severe impact of the conflict on civilians, stressing that the airport’s closure is hampering the rapid delivery of essential relief services.
Lemarquis emphasized that life in Goma has become increasingly difficult, as international humanitarian organizations face challenges in reaching those in need.
Despite the UN’s concerns, some Goma residents claim life has improved since the M23 took control of the city. They report experiencing peace and security after the departure of FARDC forces, the FDLR, and Wazalendo militias, which had previously looted their belongings.
Goma International Airport had primarily been used by FARDC, MONUSCO, international organizations, and commercial enterprises operating in eastern DRC.
The M23 announced the closure of the airspace over the airport on January 26, 2025, citing allegations that FARDC and allied forces were using the airport to transport weapons that endangered civilians. On January 28, 2025, movement formally confirmed that it had taken control of the facility.
Since the takeover, multiple appeals have been made to the M23 to reopen the airport. However, movement has so far maintained its position, citing security concerns.
