Wave of police defections in Bukavu: growing influence of AFC-M23 challenges Congolese government

For several days now, an unprecedented phenomenon has been unfolding in the city of Bukavu and its surroundings. Numerous police officers, who were previously serving the Congolese government, are choosing to voluntarily surrender, citing poor working conditions and a lack of support from the authorities.

According to local sources, several dozen police officers have left their posts in recent days, with some seeking refuge with the Alliance of Forces for Change, March 23 Movement (AFC-M23). This movement, which presents itself as a political and military alternative for the future of Congo, is increasingly attracting sympathizers from within the security forces and the civilian population.

One of the defecting police officers, speaking anonymously, stated: “We are tired of serving a regime that does not care about us. Our salaries are meager, our living conditions are deplorable, and we are often left on our own when facing armed groups.”

The AFC-M23 continues to gain influence, particularly in the eastern part of the country, where the security situation remains volatile. Its leaders claim to seek the establishment of a new order based on justice, good governance, and the recognition of the rights of marginalized communities. For them, the influx of police officers and other defense force members into their ranks is proof of the failure of the current government.

A spokesperson for AFC-M23 stated: “The Congolese people are tired of unfulfilled promises and widespread corruption. We are here to bring real change and restore the dignity of our nation.”

Faced with this wave of defections, the Congolese government finds itself in a difficult position. Security service sources confirm that measures are being taken to contain this movement and reassure the remaining loyal security forces.

However, in a context of ongoing security crises, social discontent, and political instability, the growing influence of AFC-M23 could reshape the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The situation remains fluid, and the coming days will be crucial in determining the outcome of this standoff between Kinshasa and those demanding political and security renewal for the country.
