Youth join M23’s ranks in protest as tensions rise in eastern DRC

This Thursday, several young people voluntarily joined the ranks of the Revolutionary Army of Congo (ARC), the military wing of the March 23 Movement (M23), in protest against the government of President Félix Tshisekedi. This decision comes after the deadly attack in Bukavu, which claimed the lives of several innocent civilians.

According to witnesses on the ground, the attack has sparked outrage among the local population, who accuse the Congolese authorities of being responsible for the growing insecurity in the east of the country. In response, many young people have decided to take up arms alongside the ARC/M23, stating that they want to fight what they consider to be an irresponsible and oppressive regime.

The M23, movement group active in the region for several years, continues to challenge the Congolese government and demands better representation for marginalized communities. This new recruitment of young fighters could strengthen its military capabilities and intensify the conflict in eastern DRC, which is already marked by numerous clashes between government forces and movement .

The Congolese authorities have not yet officially responded to this event, but tensions remain high in Bukavu and other areas of South Kivu province. Meanwhile, the international community is calling for restraint and urging all parties to prioritize dialogue to prevent further escalation of violence.

The security crisis in the DRC remains a major concern, and these recent developments risk worsening tensions between the Kinshasa government and the armed groups operating in the region.
