Uganda’s Top General, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Urges President Museveni to Heed the People’s Call for Change
The Chief of Uganda’s Defense Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to listen to the cries of Ugandans and accept that change is needed in the country.
The general raised this point in a message posted on the social media platform X, advocating for MP Michael Mawanda, who has been imprisoned for corruption-related charges.
General Muhoozi expressed his dismay, noting that Mawanda is the only one imprisoned while there are people in Uganda who have been looting the country for decades and still hold significant positions.
He stated, “My friend Michael Mawanda is in jail (and they think we will remain silent) while people who have been stealing from the country for decades are still Ministers. Mzee [Museveni] should listen to our cries for change.”
General Muhoozi, who is also President Museveni’s son, claimed that MP Mawanda is a political prisoner who was imprisoned due to the influence of “politically disabled individuals” within his father’s NRM party.
He added, “The major crime he committed was supporting Muhoozi Kainerugaba in Bushenyi. That is his only crime. Supporting me. Free Mawanda.”
Muhoozi once again criticized the NRM party, shortly after reappearing on platform X.
Last year, General Muhoozi openly expressed his desire to succeed President Museveni in order to address some of the ongoing issues in the country. However, reports indicate that some high-ranking military officials and NRM members do not support his bid for the presidency, as they remain loyal to President Museveni.
It remains unclear whether General Muhoozi, who previously announced he might retire from the Ugandan military, will run for the presidency in the elections scheduled for the next two years.
